One of the few things that Windows has that Mac OS X doesn't, is that nifty "Send To" contextual menu item (CMI). With it, you can send (i.e. 'copy') files and folders to a floppy disk or your desktop (along with a few other places), just by right-clicking. Since this is actually a very useful thing to be able to do, we decided to bring this capability to Mac OS X. And, since this is the Mac, we decided to make it better than the Windows equivalent.

Once you've installed the Send To CMI, you can simply use the Finder to select a file (or files or folder or folders), that you want to send to a destination. Then, right-click (or ctrl-click if you are using a one-button mouse), select "More" and then select "Send <your file name> To" from the pop-up menu. This will present you with a menu that looks something like this:

Send To Menu

The top part of this menu contains a list of your currently defined destinations. Just pick one, and your selected file(s) will be sent to it. For example, if you have a report you want to e-mail to someone, you can right-click it, and pick "Mail.app" from your list of destinations. The Mail application will start (or come to the front if it's already running), and create a new message with your report attached to it. The destinations shown here are simply the starter set of destinations that are installed along with the Send To CMI. You can easily add destinations of your own, including your iDisk or any other application or folder that you can reach with the Finder! Just click on an application, folder or volume, and pick "Create 'Send To' Destination" from the Send To pop-up menu!

Creating a destination

You can also create destinations by hand if you prefer. Just pick the "Open 'Send To' Folder" option and then add standard alias files (created in the Finder with the "Make Alias" command) that point to the destinations you want to have available. The next time you invoke the Send To CMI, those destinations will appear in the destinations list. (To remove a destination, just delete the appropriate alias file from this folder.)

In some cases, the application you want to send a file to won't be in your list of destinations, but it will be open and running. In that case, you can pick the application from the "Running Applications" menu (located below your list of destinations) and your file will be sent to that application.

Just click here to download. Then, unzip the file, and double-click on the .dmg file and then follow the simple installation instructions in the "Read Me.rtfd" file. (Note that the Send To CMI requires Mac OS X v10.5 or later.) If you like it, and decide to keep it, all we ask is that you pay a small shareware fee. ($5 is suggested, but any amount is appreciated! A PayPal link is provided.)
